How to wind yarn from a skein or hank into a ball

We sell a range of beautiful yarns that come in a hank or skein. That means that is comes as a long looped string that is not yet wound into a ball.

For a range of reasons we are unable to offer a ball winding service, but it is actually quite easy to do yourself, and there are quite a few YouTube videos available that show how to do this.

The easiest way to do it is to use a swift and a ball winder, but even if you have no equipment at all, you can do it quite easily yourself.

The first example shows how to do it using the back of a chair to hold your skein while you wind it by hand:

The second video shows how to do it with the help of another person. In this video, you can also find out how to create a ball with a centre pull (i.e. you can use the ball from the centre rather than from the outside). This will work best with smaller skeins of yarn, as you are winding the yarn around your thumb.
