Standard Yarn Weight System

The Craft Yarn Council has developed a standardised system for describing yarn weights in coordination with associations and consumers from around the world. A summary of the standards is listed below. For more information go to www.YarnStandards.com.

We have sorted our yarns into the different categories as described below. Generally speaking, you can usually substitute yarns within one category without having to change your pattern. However, you should always knit a tension square (tension swatch) to confirm that your knitting tension is the same as used by the pattern.

If you find that your tension differs from the pattern, you can either use a different sized needle or you need to re-calculate the number of stitches and rows to achieve the same size as in our pattern.Â
